Spring Nature Hunt & Interactive Kids Activities

by Katie Wallace | Updated: April 20, 2019

Springtime is a great season to enjoy some creative activities. My kids love doing crafty projects, such as going on a spring-inspired scavenger hunt and dying eggs in colorful natural dyes. Yard toys make outdoor play fun and interactive, especially for kids who have gotten used to being inside during colder weather. The whole family can enjoy these fun spring activities!

Fun Spring ideas for active kids

Spring Themed Scavenger Hunt

My kids sometimes have a hard time playing independently. I made them an outdoor scavenger hunt so they could explore the yard and find treasures. I’ve discovered that kids enjoy searching for things, such as objects in nature, painted rocks and Easter eggs. You can create a scavenger hunt in your own backyard by making your kids a list of items to find!

This object of a scavenger hunt is to find as many cool treasures in nature as possible.

  • berry
  • shell
  • clump of moss
  • shiny rock
  • egg shell
  • live insect
  • flower
  • seed pod
  • smooth pebble
  • acorn
  • big leaf

When we go on nature scavenger hunts, often my kids spend 30 minutes to an hour finding things in our yard. Once they find everything on the official nature hunt list, my kids sometimes create their own lists of more treasures to find!

Colorful Egg Dying Activity

Dying eggs is another classic Spring family activity. Did you know you can color Easter eggs with natural food dyes? You can make yellow dye with Turmeric, blue dye with blueberries and pink dye with beets. My kids enjoyed learning how to make natural food coloring and helping to dye the hard boiled eggs. Learn how you and your own kids can make natural food coloring to dye eggs!

Stomp Rocket Yard Activity

My kids love running and stomping on things, which makes Stomp Rocket a super fun interactive yard activity! Kids can enjoy the satisfaction of shooting a rocket or plane high into the air by stomping on the air powered launch pad. Stomp Rocket comes in a variety of designs, complete with launch stand connected by an air hose to the launch pad.

Stomp Rocket Kids Yard Activity

My kids enjoy this activity because it’s 100% kid-powered and it’s easy to set up and play right away. My kids ages 3 to 6 can practice taking turns, which is great training for siblings. When they nicely play together, my kids can all have fun sending the foam-tipped rockets up to 200 feet in the air. I appreciating interactive activities like Stomp Rockets, which also encourage my kids to get some exercise.

Fiddlestix Custom Lollipops

Finally, spring is a popular season for playdates and parties! Lollipops are great party favors for spring celebrations. Fiddlestix Candy Company makes it easy to order customized sweets for your party. These handcrafted, small batch lollipops are decorated with an edible image inside the candy. We received several Easter themed lollipops with bunny designs. Each lollipop came in its own wrapper, perfect for gifting in Easter baskets.  They tasted sweet with a mild honey-like flavor. Customized lollipops are a memorable treat for Easter, Mother’s Day, birthdays and even spring weddings.

It’s fun to celebrate a new season with crafty kids activities and creative projects. It’s always fun to invite friends over for a backyard scavenger hunt. Kids will love getting involved with dying eggs, which is a colorful activity and a memorable family tradition. Alternatively, when the weather gets warmer, our kids play happily when we give them a few outdoor activities to choose from.

Scavenger hunts in nature are the best! I remember when I was a child and played it for the first time during a school trip. And I won the competition, I still remember the book I received as a prize. 🙂

Cerrado los lunes! 😟☀️ We showed up at the zoo onl Cerrado los lunes! 😟☀️ We showed up at the zoo only to discover it was closed on Mondays.

Thankfully, our family has gotten pretty good at pivoting when plans change. Instead of heading home, we set off on a mile-long walk to Centro Histórico Mérida and turned an unexpected detour into an adventure.

We explored local markets, enjoyed tacos and sopa de lima for lunch, and let the kids burn off energy at a park. The Mérida heat definitely called for a treat, so we stopped for fruit bars that cost just 40 pesos (about $2.50) each. We made it home just in time for Juliet’s nap!

Next time, we’ll check the zoo schedule before we go. But honestly, this unexpected change of plans turned into a pretty great day!

✨ Takeaways:

• Travel helps build resilient kids. When plans change, they learn to adapt, stay positive, and enjoy the adventure anyway.

• Some of our best experiences happen when things don’t go as planned. The zoo will still be there another day! 🦓🐊🦛

• We’re growing in Spanish every day. The kids are becoming more confident with pronunciation, casual phrases, and new vocabulary as we navigate life in Mexico.

💬 What do you want to know about our life in Mexico?

Hola from Mérida! 🇲🇽☀️ Our first week has been cha Hola from Mérida! 🇲🇽☀️ Our first week has been challenging and rewarding as we settle into life in Mexico with our 4 kids!

• We’re finding our new normal, discovering favorite stores, trying grocery delivery, getting used to air-drying clothes and doing dishes (no clothes dryer or dishwasher).

 • We’ve almost finished all steps for receiving our family’s permanent residency cards. Praying for successful completion!

 • Also experiencing frequent tropical afternoon downpours, magnificent and soaking! 🌴

 • Being without city water for 20 hours, which impacted washing dishes and taking showers. We used our rooftop water tank sparingly.

 • House hunting & touring several long term rental houses; we hope to find a good fit for our stay-at-home lifestyle and hosting too!

I keep reminding myself that we moved here! We’re not just visiting for a few weeks. 🤯😄

Overall, we’re grateful. ☀️🙂 It’s been a good first week, and we’re excited to continue settling in and discovering what life in Mérida has in store for our family!
