Ingenious Dress Up Storage Ideas

by Katie Wallace | Updated: May 28, 2021

Who doesn’t love playing dress up? Dressing up allows kids to transform into imaginative characters and go on adventures. Here are some simple and effective dress up storage ideas for all the outfits, dresses and accessories.

Kids Dress Up Wardrobe

A child-sized dress up wardrobe is a great piece of furniture for organizing dress up clothing. You can hang dresses along the top and line up shoes on a bottom shelf. You can choose from many styles of cute dress up wardrobes. Some styles have bins and shelves built into the design for organizing dress up accessories, such as headbands, purses and jewelry.

A Line of Wall Hooks

Next, hooks on the wall may sound simple, but they can be arranged to look both cute and functional. Place 8 or more hooks in a line, using a level to install them evenly. This will allow kids to hang up their own dress up outfits. Furthermore, you can use simple wall hooks to create a cute dress up corner.

I like when our dress up outfits are neat and orderly. My girls can easily hang up their own dresses if they know where they go.

Re-purposed Bookshelf

Additionally, you could transform a medium bookshelf into a clothing rack. Accomplish this by removing several shelves and installing a clothing rod near the top. Arrange a few bins on lower shelves for organizing smaller dress up accessories.

Dress Up Trunk

If you like keeping stuff out of sight, then get your kids a dress up trunk. A generously sized wooden trunk can provide plenty of storage within a cute piece of furniture.

I refinished this dress up trunk using an old wooden box I found at a barn sale. I gave it a new top, soft closing hinges and a cheerful coat of paint. Since then, our kids have gotten years of use out of this well-made wooden trunk. Furthermore, they’ve learned how to keep their dress up outfits tidy and organized.

Dress Up Storage Ideas

Once you have a good storage solution, it’s fun to stock up on costumes, twirly dresses and accessories. We often find dress up outfits at garage sales. Additionally, our kids like buying costumes on sale after Halloween. One year, I made my daughter a no-sew phoenix costume. We’ve gone through many dress up stages; our kids have enjoyed being mermaids, superheroes, princesses, movie characters, and more. I am very blessed to be the mom of very creative kids!

Cerrado los lunes! 😟☀️ We showed up at the zoo onl Cerrado los lunes! 😟☀️ We showed up at the zoo only to discover it was closed on Mondays.

Thankfully, our family has gotten pretty good at pivoting when plans change. Instead of heading home, we set off on a mile-long walk to Centro Histórico Mérida and turned an unexpected detour into an adventure.

We explored local markets, enjoyed tacos and sopa de lima for lunch, and let the kids burn off energy at a park. The Mérida heat definitely called for a treat, so we stopped for fruit bars that cost just 40 pesos (about $2.50) each. We made it home just in time for Juliet’s nap!

Next time, we’ll check the zoo schedule before we go. But honestly, this unexpected change of plans turned into a pretty great day!

✨ Takeaways:

• Travel helps build resilient kids. When plans change, they learn to adapt, stay positive, and enjoy the adventure anyway.

• Some of our best experiences happen when things don’t go as planned. The zoo will still be there another day! 🦓🐊🦛

• We’re growing in Spanish every day. The kids are becoming more confident with pronunciation, casual phrases, and new vocabulary as we navigate life in Mexico.

💬 What do you want to know about our life in Mexico?

Hola from Mérida! 🇲🇽☀️ Our first week has been cha Hola from Mérida! 🇲🇽☀️ Our first week has been challenging and rewarding as we settle into life in Mexico with our 4 kids!

• We’re finding our new normal, discovering favorite stores, trying grocery delivery, getting used to air-drying clothes and doing dishes (no clothes dryer or dishwasher).

 • We’ve almost finished all steps for receiving our family’s permanent residency cards. Praying for successful completion!

 • Also experiencing frequent tropical afternoon downpours, magnificent and soaking! 🌴

 • Being without city water for 20 hours, which impacted washing dishes and taking showers. We used our rooftop water tank sparingly.

 • House hunting & touring several long term rental houses; we hope to find a good fit for our stay-at-home lifestyle and hosting too!

I keep reminding myself that we moved here! We’re not just visiting for a few weeks. 🤯😄

Overall, we’re grateful. ☀️🙂 It’s been a good first week, and we’re excited to continue settling in and discovering what life in Mérida has in store for our family!
